In the 1950s, comic books became very close to being banned in the United States. Rallying around child psychologist Frederick Wertham's book The Seduction of the Innocent, concerned parents, church groups, and congresspeople blamed comics (especially the popular genres of Crime and Horror comics) for driving children to crime and juvenile delinquency. In the resulting hearings, comic book narrowly avoided being banned by adopting some of the strictest self-censorship guidelines of any industry - a set of rules even more constricting than the Hayes Code, known as the Comics Code Authority of America. The Comics Code remained in effect as late as the 1970s for many publishers, and changed the face of the American mainstream comics publishing industry for years to come. This is that story, told in the style of a 1950s horror comics.
